Instead, said Michele Zuin, the city official in charge of budgeting and economics, the aim is “to better manage the numbers of tourists and disincentivize mass tourism, which is what creates, let’s say, the difficulty of living in this city.”

Nivelul apelor a atins o maximă de 138 de centimetri marţi după-amiază, potrivit autorităţilor locale, iar Piaţa San Marco era acoperită de ape. Sistemul a fost pentru prima dată activat la începutul acestui an şi nu era clar de la MOSE nu funcţiona marţi. Veneţia este vizată de un nivel de alertă portocalie, în condiţiile în care serviciile meteorologice prezic că nivelul apelor ar putea atinge 135 de centimetri joi şi 140 de centimetri vineri. Provincia Bolzano din Tirolul de Sud este una dintre cele două regiuni în care urmează să fie instituit miercuri cel mai înalt nivel de alertă, roşu. Şcolile din regiunea Friuli Venezia-Giulia, nord-est, urmau să fie închise miercuri din cauza riscului de avalanşe, în condiţiile în care nivelul de alertă a fost ridicat la portocaliu.
